Hello Water of Life Family,

By now you’ve heard that more changes are headed our way in our state, county, and local communities as a result of increases in COVID infections across the state and within our County.  Throughout this journey, we strive to exercise prudence and wisdom as we guide our church family.  After working with state, county, and local officials, we have arrived at the following decisions.

We are suspending indoor, live worship services at Fontana, Upland, and Agua de Vida starting this weekend.

We are offering a live, outdoor worship service at 6:00pm this Saturday night at the Fontana campus.

Here are some details about the outdoor service:

  • The start time is delayed until 6pm to ensure that we are worshipping in the shade of the main worship center.
  • Capacity is limited and tickets are available at Eventbrite.
  • All of our COVID precautions will remain – temp screening, social distancing & face masks – to provide a low risk, worship experience.
  • Agua de Vida will also host an outdoors service on Saturday evening at 6:00 PM in the amphitheater near the chapel.  Tickets for the ADV service are also available at Eventbrite.

Additional Information

  • Our online services continue at our normal services times (Saturday 5:00pm, Sunday 9:30am & 11:30am) hosted by our staff and pastors. Check out Ways to Watch.
  • We will continue to provide great content for your kids and young adults. EK, 56, ASM, YA.
  • The Administration Office is closed but our staff will remain available and operate remotely.
  • We are continuing to care for the needs of our church and community through the Get Help/Give Help campaign.
  • CityLink will remain open to care for both our church, the poor, and our surrounding community by providing needed tangible support.

While things are changing regularly, we’re committed to keeping you connected, cared for and updated. Be sure we can keep in touch with you; sign up for email updates and follow us on Facebook and Instagram.

We look forward to seeing you outdoors this Saturday evening.

With love and blessings,

Water of Life Community Church

Wednesday, 5.27.20 - Special Invitation for Frontline Workers

Please watch the video below for a special invitation from Pastor Dan

Our Water of Life family invites those of you who are on the front lines of this battle — nurses, doctors, emergency responders, care providers and those who have found isolation to be overwhelming, to this Pentecost Sunday service.

It is likely we won’t be able to support everyone who wants to return live in the worship center – our emphasis will be on those who need to return.

If you have found the online experience to be engaging and your needs have been met, we want to encourage you to continue worshiping in that way. Those who have a compromised immune system or are considered at a greater risk due to underlying health conditions should also remain online for the time being.

You can reserve your seat with Eventbrite by choosing a worship service below.

Tuesday, 5.26.20 - Request for Prayer & Intercession

The goal of fasting is to draw nearer to God. Biblical fasting always has to do with eliminating distractions for a spiritual purpose; it hits the reset button of our soul and renews us from the inside out. It also enables us to celebrate the goodness and mercy of God and prepares our hearts for all the good things God desires to bring into our lives. Remember, your personal fast should present a level of challenge, but it is very important to know your body, your options, and, most importantly, to seek God in prayer and follow what the Holy Spirit leads you to do.

Partial Fast

Daniel 10:3, “I did not eat any tasty food, nor did meat or wine enter my mouth, nor did I use any ointment at all, until the entire three weeks were completed.” In this type of fast you give up a part of your regular diet for a time.

Complete Fast

Complete fast of half meals a day. Many people skip breakfast and or lunch then take dinner for their fast.

Total Food Fast

This often consists of only drinking water and juices for a fast. No food.

Total Fast

No food. Only water.

Fast Other Than Food

Many diabetics and others with eating disorders fast from a pleasure other than food. Television, movies, or a hobby while devoting themselves to prayer.

Set aside special times to pray even if it is only 5 minutes several times daily. Remember, fasting is not about earning things from Him, but learning things from Him.

Thursday, 5.21.20 - Small Groups Reopening Plan

Water of Life Family,

The planning is in motion for reopening our weekend services.  Pastor Dan and leadership are working diligently to make this happen soon.  We know that many of us cannot wait to enjoy gathering together and many of us are looking forward to having fellowship with people in our WOL family.  Small Group Ministry is working hand in hand with leadership to make this happen.  Our church family will need small groups more than ever as we, day by day, move towards coming together. We know that nothing contributes to the well-being and life of a believer quite like growing with a small group of other believers. That’s how the church at large began and that’s how Water of Life began.

Small Group Ministry plans to implement three phases for groups gathering together.  The first phase is online; second phase will be in our backyards or other outdoor spaces; and then finally, phase three gathering in our homes.  If you would like to be part of the Small Group Team and part of helping us with our reopening plans, please fill out this short form: SG New Leader Interest, and we will connect with you as soon as possible to get the process started.

We are looking forward to hearing from you,

Your Small Groups Team

Wednesday, 5.20.20 - Reopening Update

Sunday, May 17, 2020

Water of Life Family,

Throughout our lives each of us has been surprised, shocked and disappointed by events or circumstances that were unforeseen. I think the COVID-19 outbreak and subsequent quarantine would certainly fall into this category. When I think back 3 months ago to February, life was seemingly rolling along as normal. None of us knew what lie ahead. Fortunately, we serve a God who is never surprised by the things that shock us. He is never overwhelmed by circumstances or situations that sweep over us and threaten to overwhelm us. What we feel is chaos, He turns into destiny if we stay at His feet and allow Him to lead us. This has been and remains the goal of my life and ministry, to be led by Him.  I think it is sufficient to say I never took a class in seminary on pastoring a church through a pandemic and quarantine. So, as I often say, school is life and life is school — learn your lessons well. Believe me, I am trying to do just that! But I must say the lessons have never been this tough to discern.

Over the past several months, I have listened to our Governor’s zoom calls and heard him repeatedly speak of every aspect of life in California excluding people of faith and places of worship. I have seen him deem churches as non-essential and bypass the need to worship while congratulating us on “doing the essential things like feeding the poor and caring for those who are shut in.”  But as I have stressed to his staff in our interactions, we are not a social service club; we serve others because we believe what Jesus said: “If you do it to the least of these you have done it unto Me”. Our love for others and our care for the hurting are part of our worship directed to Jesus. But those serving Him also need to be fed. I hear week after week from many of you who are starving spiritually, hungering for fellowship and encouragement. Let me share a bit of an email I recently received so you can sense the needs of those on the front lines;

Greetings Pastor Danny, Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! For restarting live, in person, church services once more. You will be under a lot of fire and criticism for doing so at this time. However, speaking personally as a nurse at two large tertiary care hospitals, that are dealing with Covid-19 patients on a daily basis, I agree with your Spirit led decision to resume on site services. The church is very essential in this crisis. I have had many mornings coming home after working grueling consecutive 12 hour shifts, crying because I’ve listened to 2 or 3 Covid code blue announcements over the loud speaker calling for the team because someone is dying…and dying alone because no visitors are allowed. Just putting on the proper PPE and wearing it for 12 hours is very stressful. And both of my hospitals are running out of appropriate N95s which makes us feel that we’re not being protected safely to do our jobs.

The mental anguish and anxiety I am feeling I’ve kept to myself, as to not affect the quality of excellent care that I must provide for my patients. I am weary. Thank goodness for your Daily Devotions! I thrive on them for encouragement and redirected focus. Thank you for being obedient to The Father in guiding us through this pandemic and just in general. For my spiritual and mental health, I NEED to get out of my hospitals, this house and worship with our Water of Life family in person!

We have no desire to rebel against the Governor’s directives; Our goal is not to be activists making a point. I am a pastor whose job is to love, equip and serve the people God has placed in my care. But I do fear for the future of the church as our voice has been muted and our ability to care for those isolated, depressed and discouraged has been removed. We are not allowed to hold classes for those battling addictions, grieving a loss or struggling with depression. I have made many attempts to reach our Governor in order to discuss the role people of faith have as first responders during a crisis like this. Clearly, we have been disregarded, marginalized and counted as part of the problem not part of the answer. We are part of the answer. To quote June 30, 2015 News Release from the American Psychiatric Association;

“Many people facing a mental health challenge, personally or on behalf of a family member, turn first to a faith leader. And for many receiving psychiatric care, religion and spirituality are an important part of healing. In their role as “first responders,” faith leaders can help dispel misunderstandings, reduce stigma associated with mental illness and treatment, and facilitate access to treatment for those in need.”

We have worked tirelessly to build a plan that we believe allows churches and other houses of worship to open safely in California. The Governor’s staff have this document and they tell us that it has been passed onto the Covid Task Force. In their words, “It is a great document”, but in the next breath I was told, “We don’t want you to think this is going to happen anytime soon.”

After hearing the Governor explain on a zoom call two weeks ago that “Large gatherings of strangers make me anxious so please be prepared because Major League Baseball, the NBA and churches will not be gathering anytime soon.” It became apparent to me that our Governor sees worship in the same light that he sees entertainment. I knew it was time to pray and consider moving ahead in a very limited and very safe fashion to reopen our worship services.

So, I need to be extremely clear.  We are not reopening as “Business as usual”. Initially we are going to offer one service for first responders, those isolated and depressed and those who have been sheltering in place alone. We will only use 10% of our worship center, 320 attendees, to allow for social distancing and safety.  We will then expand the number of services we offer per weekend while maintaining the cap of 320 attendees per service.

All CDC guidelines will be followed including, requiring masks to be worn at all times, hand sanitizer throughout our worship center, temperature screening stations at all entry doors. All attenders will have to sign up in advance and have a reserved seat. We do not want anyone attending if they are feeling ill, immune compromised, or if they are in one of the high-risk groups

Please know that I understand 80% of you who answered the survey would like to return immediately. At this reduced capacity, it is likely we won’t be able to support everyone who wants to return live in the worship center – our emphasis will be on those who need to return. Know that this will be an ongoing process and we will continue to reach out to you throughout the coming days and weeks as we return safely and thoughtfully.

MOST IMPORTANTLY I want to ask you to fast and pray. We are certainly in a time of deep need and we need our Father to move in our midst and speak clearly as we seek His face. We will continue to offer our very best online services, morning devotions and Wednesday night Bible study for those of you not attending this live service, (which will initially be 99% of you). Please remain prayerful and patient as we journey further into the unknown and begin to reopen our church. Thank you for being the amazing followers of Jesus that you are!

Saturday, March 14, 2020

Hey Water of Life Family,

I’m just finishing studying for this weekend’s new series on Contentment. It is all about the safety God provides when we find our way in Him. Tonight and tomorrow we are going to talk about Psalm 23. You know the verse even if you don’t know the address, “The Lord is my Shepherd I shall not want.” I am not sure there could be a more appropriate verse for the situation we find ourselves in today. Uncertainty is rampant, crisis and a bit of panic seem to abound. Remember Jesus said “In this world you will have tribulation but fear not I have overcome the world.” I was just texting a friend in Manila and he was saying they were going into quarantine there today. It really is a time that “In this world” we have tribulation.

But Jesus is forever stable! He is a rock in times like these. Many of you are not experiencing that joy right now though because Jesus isn’t being allowed to shepherd your journey, worry and anxiety are. We are going to talk about that this weekend so I hope you will gather with family and friends and join us. Worship begins tonight at 5pm and tomorrow morning at 9:30am and 11:30am. Our services will be available to stream all day so make some time to be still and sit before the Lord. A Sabbath is a really good thing when you are full of fear and concern. Let the Lord Jesus move in on your feelings and build your faith so you can confidently say, “I shall not want.”

Bless you! Pastor Dan

Each week for the last 30 years I have lived in a rhythm, a pattern of preparation. I study, I pray, I rest, and I prepare my heart to gather with others who love Jesus. I have done this for so long I know the process well. Some weeks are more difficult than others, some more rich than others but all of them are filled with seeing and meeting and praying and talking with people. We are going online this weekend and believe me I am grateful for online viewing. I am so glad we can still gather digitally and worship even if I can’t see you! But I will miss gathering to worship as it always gives me life to be with others loving Jesus.

Today’s latest update for the WOL family is that we will not be holding services at Rosena Ranch this week as the school has been closed to us until April 15.

The ground is shifting fast these days. Like many of you, this week for me has been interrupted by life and reality. My rhythm is gone, my expectation of meeting with people and gathering with them to worship is lost. The things that I am used to are not as they were. This is life though, isn’t it? Jesus said in John 14:1, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.” Do not lose your way when you lose your rhythm, your balance, when you lose those things that are familiar to you and help you in the journey.

Turn your heart to an ever-deeper place with Jesus. He is our Rock and our strong foundation. He is our Shepherd and our ever-present help in times of need. Crisis and change create fear. Jesus and His Spirit create safety. This weekend as we begin a new series on Contentment, we are going to be talking about how to live in the moment, whatever the moment looks like. When David said, “The Lord is my Shepherd I shall not want” he was making an amazing declaration. The Lord will Shepherd me, He will guide me, keep me, tend me, protect me, revive me and nourish me. The Hebrew word for shepherd is actually translated as friendship in some places. What better thing is there in times of change and crisis than a King who is a friend?

Let’s take the change and the crisis before us and make today a great day, a deeper day with Jesus and a day we let our lights shine a little brighter to a world full of fear and uncertainty. Let’s gather this weekend in small groups, and with family and friends, and worship together believing that God can do something great in all of this uncertainty.

We will be live online at 5pm Saturday night and Sunday mornings at 9:30am and 11:30am, and there will be recordings available all day Sunday on our website so anytime you can gather and worship, jump in and do that.

God Bless! Pastor Dan
